There is a very specific reason for it.
Anyone driving a modern car with keyless entry is, quite literally, carrying a security risk in their coat pocket. Organised criminal gangs have long exploited the radio technology used by keyless systems – often leaving no trace, making no noise and without breaking a window. A piece of aluminium foil from the kitchen can close this vulnerability surprisingly effectively.
How keyless systems make life easier for car thieves
At first glance, keyless entry systems seem ingenious: the driver only needs to carry the key, while the car detects it by radio signal and unlocks or starts at the press of a button. Inside is a small radio transmitter that constantly communicates with the vehicle.
These signals operate within a particular frequency range, usually around 315 or 433 megahertz. This is precisely where criminals intervene. They do not need to steal the key – they simply extend its range or copy its signal.
Relay attack: the key is in the house – but the car is gone
The most common current technique is known as a relay attack. It involves two offenders working together. One stands near the front door or flat entrance, while the other waits beside the parked car. Using specialist equipment, they amplify the radio signal from the key, which is supposedly safe in the hallway, handbag or on the kitchen table.
The car “thinks” the key is right beside it – and can be unlocked and started even though the owner is inside the house.
The entire process takes seconds. There is no smashed window, no damaged lock and often not even an activated alarm. Many victims only notice the theft the following morning, when the driveway is empty.

So-called signal or code grabbers present another threat. These devices intercept the key's radio signal, for example when its button is briefly pressed while parking or locking the car. From the captured data, offenders create a digital duplicate of the key.
As the relevant technology becomes less expensive, these tools are spreading ever more widely. They appear in dubious online shops and forums, are small and inconspicuous, and can be hidden easily. Many vehicle owners have never even heard of such attacks, so they are understandably shocked when their car suddenly disappears with no signs of a break-in.
Why aluminium foil protects your key – the physics behind it
As mundane as it may sound, the kitchen staple aluminium foil can effectively disrupt these radio-based attacks. The reason is a physical principle known since the 19th century: the Faraday cage.
A Faraday cage is an enclosure made from conductive material, which allows little or no electric fields and radio waves to penetrate inside. Aluminium conducts electricity very well. When radio waves hit aluminium foil, electrical currents flow across its outer surface. The interior remains largely shielded.

Dedicated RFID protective pouches use the same principle and are often more robust and convenient in practice, though they naturally cost more than foil from a kitchen roll.
Where you keep the key makes a major difference
Many people habitually place their car key in a bowl in the hallway, right beside the front door. That is exactly what thieves exploit, because the distance between key and car is often short. Powerful amplifiers can then extend the signal as far as the vehicle.
Storing your wrapped or otherwise protected key deliberately provides much better protection:
- Keep keys as far as possible from doors and windows.
- Choose rooms further inside the home, such as a bedroom chest of drawers or an internal cupboard.
- Use metal containers, such as tins or small lockboxes, as an additional enclosure.
A simple household solution is enough: a sturdy kitchen tin, lined with a little fabric, can hold the whole family's keys. Close the lid and the radio signal is greatly weakened or blocked entirely.
A layered strategy: making your car genuinely unattractive to thieves
Relying on aluminium foil alone does not go far enough. Anyone who wants to make life genuinely difficult for criminals should combine several measures. Security professionals refer to these as “layers” of protection.
Mechanical barriers still deter thieves
A steering-wheel lock, visible alarm system or wheel clamp may seem old-fashioned, but they offer one decisive advantage: they can be seen immediately. Many thieves deliberately seek easy targets. If it is obvious at first glance that a car will require effort, they will often move on.
Where the car is parked also matters. A well-lit car park, a garage or parking bays on busier roads all reduce the risk. Secluded yards, rear courtyards that are difficult to overlook and dark side streets, by contrast, are more tempting.
Use and maintain electronic safeguards correctly
Almost every newer car has an immobiliser, alarm or GPS tracking system. However, many owners barely know how these systems work, let alone whether they are still operating correctly.
An immobiliser that has not been checked for years can simply fail when it matters – without the keeper realising.
A brief inspection at a garage or by an automotive electrician at longer intervals is worthwhile. They can check whether sensors trigger, sirens activate and tracking systems remain live. Anyone keeping their vehicle for a longer period should also keep an eye on software updates.
Family habits: one weak link is enough
In households with several vehicles, key management is often chaotic. One key is in the hallway basket, another stays permanently in a jacket, and a third sits on a windowsill. Criminals only need one of these easily targeted keys.
A clear rule for everyone in the household is sensible:
- Put all car keys in one designated place in the home.
- Keep that storage location as central as possible, well away from doors and windows.
- A metal box, tin or RFID container is essential, not optional.
If children or teenagers live in the household, explain to them why a key should not be left “just for a moment” on the shoe cabinet. One forgotten key near the front door can undermine even the most careful precautions.
When it is worth switching keyless functions off completely
Many manufacturers offer an option in the vehicle menu to disable keyless entry, at least in part. The remote control remains available, but the car no longer constantly searches for the key.
This setting is particularly safer, in the literal sense, for anyone who often parks outside their home, lives in an area with a higher theft rate or owns a particularly sought-after model. Convenience is reduced, but the route for relay attacks is removed.
Those reluctant to give up convenience can achieve a similar level of protection by combining aluminium foil or an RFID pouch, a carefully chosen parking spot and mechanical locks.
What terms such as RFID and Faraday cage mean
Many reports on this subject refer to RFID protection or RFID blockers. RFID stands for “Radio-Frequency Identification” – in other words, identification by radio signal. The car key sends a type of digital identifier to the vehicle. Aluminium foil or a suitable protective pouch blocks precisely this radio communication.
The Faraday cage mentioned above is not a high-tech laboratory product, but a fundamental concept in electrical engineering. Any sealed enclosure made from conductive material – whether aluminium foil, a metal box or a specialist pouch – can form such a cage. For everyday use, a sturdy tin with a tightly fitting lid, stored in a cupboard, is often sufficient.
Ultimately, it is a simple calculation: a few seconds spent wrapping the key, moving it away from the hallway, perhaps adding a steering-wheel lock – and your vehicle moves significantly further down the target list of organised gangs. For many drivers, that alone is reason enough to use aluminium foil not only for packed lunches, but for their car key as well.
