Sony is raising PlayStation 5 prices: PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal costs

Sony has just confirmed that the prices of its PlayStation 5 consoles will soon go up. It is the sort of adjustment many people expected, but it still stings.

Why Sony says PlayStation 5 prices are going up

Rising RAM costs are pushing up the price of many of our favourite tech gadgets, and consoles are not escaping the trend. Sony has now announced a price increase for its PS5 range-and it is a substantial one. Sony’s statement reads:

“In light of ongoing pressure from the global economic environment, we have made the decision to increase the prices of the PS5, PS5 Pro and PlayStation Portal worldwide. We recognise the impact that price changes have on our community and, after careful consideration, we concluded that this measure was necessary to continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players around the world.”

What will the PlayStation 5 cost?

The PlayStation 5 line-up is therefore moving upmarket. The headline change is a €100 jump, which is a lot. This kind of “adjustment” is virtually unheard of in the history of games consoles: traditionally, hardware becomes cheaper over time. However, the current generation has been hit hard-first by the COVID pandemic, then by the semiconductor shortage, and now by the RAM shortage-against a very unfavourable economic backdrop.

Here are the new European prices for the PS5:

  • PS5: 649,99 €
  • PS5 Digital Edition: 599,99 €
  • PS5 Pro: 899,99 €
  • PS Portal: 249,99 €

PS5 launch prices, previous increases, and the date the new prices apply

As a reminder, the PS5 launched in late 2020 in two versions: the standard model at 499 euros, and the version without a Blu-ray drive at 399 euros. Prices have already risen once before, in 2022, with an extra 50 euros added to the bill. This time, it is 100 euros.

If you are planning to buy a PS5, it is strongly recommended you act now. These new prices will be applied from 2 April 2026-this coming Thursday.

Other consoles also facing market pressure

The PS5 is not the only current-generation console dealing with market turbulence. In 2023, for example, Microsoft increased the price of its Xbox Series X and S by 50 euros. Another rise could arrive in the weeks ahead. The Switch 2 could also follow the same direction.

Other consoles will inevitably be affected by the RAM crisis too. All eyes are currently on the Steam Machine, whose price is fuelling plenty of speculation.
