Following successful evaluation trials, a new Ukrainian drone has entered the arsenal of the Defence Forces: the Alexa Spatium, the country’s first domestically developed jet-powered drone interceptor. The platform has been created to destroy small airborne, land and naval targets, with particular focus on Russian unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) used in attacks.
Alexa Spatium jet-powered drone interceptor
The Alexa Spatium is a high-speed unmanned aircraft powered by a turbojet engine. It is intended primarily to counter Russian Geran-3, Geran-4, Geran-5 and Shahed-131 kamikaze drones, although it can also be deployed against reconnaissance drones, helicopters and other individual targets. During testing, the interceptor demonstrated the tactical and technical specifications claimed by its manufacturer.
Its principal capabilities include a high top speed, a low minimum speed designed to conserve fuel, a substantial operating altitude and a significant range. The aircraft can operate at low and medium altitudes and offers high manoeuvrability. It can be employed in several ways, either using pre-set coordinates or direct guidance, while its detection and targeting systems incorporate television and infrared sensors.
Launch system, airframe and payload options
Measuring approximately 1.5 by 1.7 metres, the system can be launched within minutes using a mobile catapult. Its airframe is made from a lightweight yet durable composite material, designed to withstand abrupt manoeuvres without loss of control. It also includes control and video transmission systems, and its configuration can accommodate different combat payloads, including fragmentation and high-explosive warheads, shaped charges and thermobaric payloads.
Another stated feature is fully remote preparation and launch, alongside a high degree of automation and minimal requirements for preparing the operating position. The complex can be carried in a pick-up truck and has a modular architecture. If the mission is not completed, the unmanned aerial vehicle can return to its launch point for reuse.
Ukrainian drone capabilities expand in 2026
The Alexa Spatium’s introduction comes amid a rapid expansion in Ukraine’s unmanned systems capabilities. Since the start of 2026, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has codified and authorised 413 unmanned aerial systems (UAS) for use by the Defence Forces, almost all of them of Ukrainian manufacture. The arrival of this jet-powered interceptor therefore broadens the range of assets intended to counter the threat posed by Russian drones.
