Garmin D2 Mach 2 Pro brings inReach satellite connectivity to pilots

The Garmin D2 Mach 2 Pro is Garmin’s new flagship smartwatch built specifically for pilots. For the first time in the D2 line, it includes inReach technology, letting you stay reachable via satellite and mobile networks without relying on a smartphone.

This launch is a bit of a surprise. Garmin is widely known for its sports watches, but it also makes specialist watches for aviation. Until now, pilots who wanted Garmin’s inReach capability had to carry a separate dedicated device alongside their watch. With the D2 Mach 2 Pro, that functionality is now fully integrated on the wrist. It can place calls, send messages and share your live location through LiveTrack, all without needing a phone.

In an emergency, an SOS button sends an alert to the Garmin Response coordination centre, which operates 24/7. That is arguably the strongest selling point: a self-contained safety lifeline for pilots who frequently fly in areas with poor coverage from conventional mobile networks.

Because inReach is built in, the watch is designed to keep you connected when you’re away from your handset. Alongside calling and messaging, it also supports real-time position sharing with LiveTrack, so others can follow your progress.

Display, materials and battery life

On the hardware side, the Garmin D2 Mach 2 Pro features a 1.4-inch (3.6 cm) ultra-bright AMOLED display to improve readability in the cockpit. The 51 mm case is paired with a titanium bezel finished in Carbon Gray DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon). Garmin supplies two QuickFit straps in the box: one in Chestnut leather and one in silicone.

Speakers and microphones are built in so you can handle calls directly from your wrist. Finally, Garmin claims up to 24 days of battery life in standard watch mode.

A cockpit on your wrist - at a premium price

As you’d expect, the D2 Mach 2 Pro is packed with pilot-focused tools and technologies. It includes advanced aviation maps, connectivity to avionics systems (through the Garmin Pilot app on iOS), aviation weather reports, PlaneSync compatibility and voice commands.

The Red Shift mode turns the entire interface red to make it easier to read during night flights. The watch also offers in-flight biometric tracking, an LED torch with white and red light, and more than 100 sports activities for everyday use beyond the cockpit.

Garmin’s pricing strategy may be hard to swallow for most people: the D2 Mach 2 Pro is listed at 1,549 dollars. To use the satellite connection, you’ll also need an active subscription (price not provided). A few other constraints are worth noting: avionics linking is limited to iOS users, and neither LTE nor satellite service is available in every country.
