OpenAI has teased a keyboard designed around shortcuts for Codex, its productivity tool. This agent platform competes directly with Claude Code and Claude Cowork. It can automate coding work as well as repetitive administrative tasks, helping users save time.
The creator of ChatGPT is preparing to launch a physical keyboard. In a video posted on its X account, OpenAI teased the product, set 15 July as the date for further news and referred to an “update” to Codex shortcuts. Codex is its productivity tool and a direct rival to Claude Code and Claude Cowork.
In practical terms, the device is aimed at Codex users and is intended to help them work even faster. The video also confirms a partnership between OpenAI and keyboard manufacturer Work Louder. It is therefore unrelated to the products OpenAI is developing internally with Jony Ive, Apple’s former design chief.
Codex shortcuts and AI task automation
Codex is OpenAI’s AI agent platform, allowing users to hand tasks over to artificial intelligence. It was originally built for coding, but its scope has gradually widened to include other activities, such as producing a report or reviewing tax documents.
The platform can also automate repetitive administrative work on a computer. It has now become one of OpenAI’s flagship products.
Codex at the heart of OpenAI’s super-app
OpenAI is still developing a super-app project intended to bring numerous features and applications together in a single product. This initiative is expected to combine ChatGPT, its conversational chatbot, with Codex, which carries out work-related actions on the user’s behalf.
Rumours suggest that Codex could take centre stage in this super-app, ahead of ChatGPT’s chatbot interface. A Financial Times report also stated that OpenAI is now placing its future on AI agents rather than chatbots.
Our view
OpenAI’s decision to release a keyboard dedicated to Codex highlights the product’s growing importance to the company. Thanks to its productivity benefits, Codex is more appealing to businesses and professionals than ChatGPT. This is currently a more profitable market segment than the consumer market, whose users are more likely to settle for a free version of AI.
