iPhone users can now use two WhatsApp accounts on the same device

iPhone owners can finally run two WhatsApp accounts on a single handset, removing the need to carry one phone for work and another for personal use. The change is part of a broader set of updates Meta has been rolling out for its messaging service.

For years, WhatsApp limited users to one account per smartphone. That restriction began to ease in 2023, when the Android version introduced support for adding a second account (tied to a second phone number) on the same device. After a long wait, the same capability is now arriving for iOS.

“ You can now have two WhatsApp accounts connected at the same time on iOS, just like on Android ”, Meta said in a post published this week. The feature is particularly useful for anyone who wants to keep a personal WhatsApp account separate from a work one. Its arrival on iPhone also makes sense given that iPhones can already run two active SIMs.

With dual accounts on iOS, users can keep both numbers signed in simultaneously on the same iPhone, rather than splitting their personal and professional messages across different devices.

The dual-account option for iPhone is only one of several improvements Meta has announced to refine the WhatsApp experience. WhatsApp has also introduced a new feature for managing the storage the app uses. In addition, it is launching a new chat history transfer option for people moving from an iPhone to an Android phone.

Meta AI in WhatsApp: image edits and reply drafts

WhatsApp is also continuing to invest in AI. The messaging app is gaining a Meta AI-based tool that lets you edit an image using a prompt before sending it.

For English-speaking WhatsApp users, Meta is also offering a new feature that enables Meta AI to automatically generate draft replies to conversations, based on a reading of earlier messages. As a reminder, the company says it uses a new architecture that allows the AI to analyse chats without those conversations being accessible to employees.
