Google Maps gets new 3D navigation and Ask Maps with Gemini AI

The maps app that millions of people keep open in the car, on foot or on a bike is facing its biggest overhaul in years. Google Maps is getting new 3D navigation and an AI-powered conversational mode that can handle complex questions - launching first in the United States, then rolling out gradually to other countries.

What is fundamentally changing in Google Maps

At its core, Google is tackling two major areas at once: how we navigate while travelling, and how we find information about places. To do that, the company is introducing two new building blocks:

  • Immersive Navigation: a spatial 3D view with visible lanes, traffic lights and buildings.
  • Ask Maps: a Gemini-based conversational assistant that answers questions in natural language.

Both features draw on Google’s Gemini models. They process aerial imagery, Street View captures and live traffic signals to create a detailed, continuously updated representation of what’s around you.

Immersive Navigation: the road comes off the screen

The familiar simplified 2D map is pushed into the background. With Immersive Navigation, your route is rendered as a three-dimensional scene. It feels closer to a video game than the old sat-nav look - but presented in a restrained way, clearly optimised for legibility.

Buildings, bridges and terrain show up with depth rather than as flat shapes. That becomes particularly helpful in tricky spots: multi-lane slip roads, tight junctions, or maze-like city centres.

In those situations, Google relies on so-called “Smart Zooms”: the map automatically zooms in, tilts into perspective, and makes tall buildings partially transparent. That keeps the guidance visible even when your real-world view from the car is limited by bends or built-up areas.

The underlying data comes from Street View and aerial photography. The Gemini models interpret it and form something like a digital “spatial understanding” of the route. That processing is exactly what sets this view apart from earlier 3D experiments in mapping apps.

Less robotic sat-nav voice, more everyday language

In parallel, Google is reworking voice guidance. Instead of stiff, standard instructions, prompts are intended to sound more like a real passenger speaking. The idea is to reduce drivers’ mental load because the directions better match what you’re experiencing on the road.

Examples:

  • Instead of “Turn right in 300 metres”, it becomes more like “Go past the next exit and take the one after that.”
  • Rather than relying only on distances, it adds landmarks such as distinctive buildings or major junctions.

According to the company, more than five million traffic adjustments are fed into the system every second. On top of that, over ten million user reports come in each day, flagging closures, accidents or damage. This data influences both congestion alerts and the calculation of alternative routes.

Clearer alternative routes with real trade-offs

Google Maps is also changing how it presents alternative routes. Rather than simply showing “3 minutes longer” or “similar arrival time”, the app will put more emphasis on the concrete pros and cons of each option:

  • the shortest route, but with tolls or an expensive congestion charge zone,
  • a slightly longer route, but with smoother traffic,
  • a detour, but without tunnels or without motorways.

Much of this exists in theory today, but it often looks abstract on screen. Going forward, it should be immediately obvious what you’re choosing before you set off - something that can make a real difference in everyday, high-stress situations.

Ask Maps: asking questions instead of tapping and scrolling

The second major addition, Ask Maps, turns Google Maps into a kind of chat window for places. Instead of clicking through filters, opening categories and manually reading reviews, users can query the app directly.

The new mode understands everyday questions in natural language (initially in the United States in English, with more languages likely later) and builds answers straight from Maps and review data. Possible queries might include:

  • “Show me quiet cafés with Wi‑Fi where I can work in the afternoon.”
  • “Where can I eat with children tonight, without a reservation, within 20 minutes of here?”
  • “Which gyms near me have long opening hours and aren’t overcrowded late in the evening?”

Rather than returning only a list, Ask Maps is designed to explain why a place fits - for example, based on specific reviews, photos, opening hours or location. The result is closer to a consultation than a traditional search results page.

How Gemini powers Maps in the background

Behind the scenes is the Gemini family of AI models - the same technology Google uses for its chatbot and other products. It analyses:

  • live signals such as how busy a place is or expected waiting times.

From that, it produces a condensed recommendation tailored to the question. In doing so, Google Maps moves closer to AI chatbots - while staying clearly focused on places and real-world activities.

What this means for drivers and cities

For motorists, the new navigation could improve safety. If junctions and slip roads are easier to read at a glance, there’s less need for last-second reactions. That can lower stress and reduce risky lane changes right before a turn.

For cities and shop owners, it increases the importance of well-maintained digital profiles. Missing or outdated details about opening hours, accessibility or facilities can quickly mean a business drops out of AI-driven recommendations.

Practical tips for users

Anyone who relies heavily on Maps can prepare for a few changes:

  • In the car: position your phone mount so the 3D view is easy to see without blocking the road.
  • In unfamiliar cities: use Ask Maps to guide you through new neighbourhoods instead of rigidly hopping from one venue to the next.
  • For groups: state requirements (child-friendly, wheelchair access, vegan options) directly in the question rather than improvising later.

If you run a business such as a shop or restaurant, it’s worth keeping your details in Google Maps and your Business Profile carefully up to date: current photos, clear descriptions, correct opening hours. Those are exactly the data points that will be used as supporting arguments in AI conversations.

Opportunities, risks and a look ahead

More 3D, more AI, more context: it all promises greater convenience, but it also brings familiar risks. Incorrect data or misleading reviews can be amplified by the AI assistant if people lean too heavily on its answers. Particularly during emergencies or road closures, paying attention to signs and your surroundings remains essential.

It will also be telling how well the system copes with local quirks: winding historic centres, rural areas with weak data coverage, or regions where Street View barely exists. Those are where Maps’ new “spatial intelligence” will face its toughest test.

Ultimately, Google is aiming for navigation that feels like a local passenger: it shows the world as you actually experience it, and answers questions before you have to laboriously type them into a search box. How well that works day to day should become clear once Immersive Navigation and Ask Maps begin arriving in the first European countries.
