Mercedes-Benz EQS MBUX Hyperscreen Revealed

At 141 cm wide - effectively stretching from one side of the car to the other - and covering an area of 2432.11 cm², the new Mercedes-Benz MBUX Hyperscreen makes an immediate impression. It consists of a single curved glass surface, shaped at 650°C to prevent viewing distortions.

This latest and most ambitious version of the MBUX system will debut in the new Mercedes-Benz EQS - the electric equivalent of the S-Class - which will be presented this year, although the system will initially be offered only as an option.

While it appears to be one display, the MBUX Hyperscreen is actually made up of three OLED screens: one for the instrument cluster, one for infotainment and another for the front passenger. The latter two also feature haptic feedback, using 12 actuators in total to create a slight vibration in the fingertips when the desired function is selected.

The striking aluminosilicate glass surface - the same type of glass used for Gorilla Glass in smartphones - receives a three-layer coating called “Silver Shadow”. This reduces reflections, makes the surface easier to clean and delivers the perception of a “high-quality surface”.

As shown, the MBUX Hyperscreen also incorporates two conventional air vents at its outer edges, intended to “connect the digital with the physical world”, according to Mercedes.

The Mercedes-Benz MBUX Hyperscreen is more than a visual statement

Its purpose is not merely to impress those sitting inside the forthcoming EQS. As an evolution of the operating system introduced with the new S-Class (W223), the MBUX Hyperscreen is also designed to be easier to use. It avoids the need to navigate through submenus for the most frequently used functions - navigation, radio/media and telephone - through what Mercedes-Benz calls “zero-layer”, or “no layers or levels”.

It will also employ artificial intelligence capable of learning from and adapting to its user. As well as displaying the appropriate functions when they are needed, it can make suggestions based on the user's usage patterns.

The front passenger display can likewise be personalised, with up to seven profiles available. As with the other two screens, its artificial intelligence system acts as an “attentive assistant”, making recommendations in line with usage habits.

Passenger display and safety functions

Entertainment functions are subject to the safety rules in force in the countries where the EQS is being driven. Whenever the passenger seat is unoccupied, the screen in front of it defaults to a decorative display.

A “computer on wheels”

In total, the MBUX Hyperscreen uses eight CPU cores, 24 GB of RAM and 46.4 GB per second of RAM memory bandwidth. A multifunction camera and an ambient light sensor also enable it to adjust the brightness of its three displays to suit the surrounding conditions.

Due to make its debut in the Mercedes-Benz EQS, the new MBUX Hyperscreen already has another customer: the EQS-based electric SUV that Mercedes-Benz will launch in 2022.
