Beyond mobile phones and the extensive product range it offers around the world, Chinese technology company Xiaomi is also set to become synonymous with fully electric cars.
Its first model, the Xiaomi SU7, has just been revealed in a series of images released by the MIIT (Ministry of Industry and Information Technology) as part of the type-approval process.
As anticipated eight months ago - when it was known by another name - the Xiaomi SU7 will be a large four-door family saloon. It measures almost five metres in length (4,997 mm), is nearly two metres wide (1,963 mm) and stands 1,455 mm tall. Its wheelbase is exactly three metres.
Xiaomi SU7 powertrains and batteries
The available information confirms that there will be two powertrain choices. One will use a single motor mounted on the rear axle, delivering a maximum output of 220 kW (299 hp). Alternatively, a twin-motor variant will place one motor on each axle and produce a combined maximum of 495 kW (673 hp).
The lower-powered option has a total weight below two tonnes (1,980 kg), while the dual-motor model rises to 2.2 tonnes.
The entry-level version will be “powered” by a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery supplied by BYD. The twin-motor model, meanwhile, will receive a nickel cobalt manganese (NCM) battery manufactured by CATL.
Battery capacities and the respective driving ranges have not yet been disclosed. However, the less powerful version has a top speed of 210 km/h, whereas the more powerful model reaches 265 km/h.
Three trim levels
According to the information published by the MIIT, there will be three variants: SU7, SU7 Max and SU7 Pro. The available images reveal 19-inch and 20-inch alloy wheels, as well as a version featuring an upgraded braking system. A retractable rear spoiler mounted at the top of the boot lid will be offered as an option.
Higher-specification versions will also incorporate systems such as roof-mounted LiDAR (in the cover image), which should provide the SU7 with enhanced active-safety and autonomous-driving capabilities. Cameras fitted to the side pillars are included too.
Xiaomi SU7 interior technology
Only a few interior images have been circulating online, but it is already known that the huge centrally mounted dashboard display will run HyperOS, the operating system Xiaomi also uses in its smartphones.
When will it arrive?
Production of the new Xiaomi SU7 is expected to begin later this year at one of BAIC’s (Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Co. Ltd) factories in China.
The first customer deliveries are planned for February next year, and the launch phase will also include a “Founder’s Edition”.
There is still no firm information regarding a potential launch in Europe or any other market outside China. However, Xiaomi is already a familiar brand to many European consumers, which could lead it to add the automotive world to its extensive product catalogue on the “old continent”.
