Xiaomi SU7 Ultra: Officially registered in Germany after Nürburgring record

What only recently looked like a Nürburgring PR stunt is suddenly becoming very real: the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, previously known chiefly for its astonishing lap time, has now been officially registered in Germany. That opens the door to a market launch for a manufacturer better known for smartphones – one now looking to move dangerously close to European premium brands in the electric segment.

From a Nordschleife record to a Munich number plate

Technology group Xiaomi has been active in the car business for three years. With the SU7, the company immediately entered a class otherwise dominated by Porsche, Tesla and others: a large, all-electric saloon with sporting ambitions. At the summit of the range sits the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra, an exceptionally powerful version intended to act as a technology showcase.

During the summer, a prototype Ultra recorded a 6:22.091-minute lap of the Nordschleife – a major statement in the EV world. The subsequent production model completed the circuit in 7:04.957 minutes, putting it at the top of the production electric saloon rankings for this track. Cars such as the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT and even the Rimac Nevera hypercar icon were suddenly comparisons rather than untouchable benchmarks.

The Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has established itself as one of the fastest electric saloons in the world – now not only on the race circuit, but officially on European roads as well.

The crucial development came in early July 2025, when the first SU7 Ultra was registered in Munich with German number plates and full road approval under European law. Carrying the registration M SU7088E, the saloon serves as a test vehicle for the manufacturer.

Xiaomi has already used this car for a test drive of roughly 800 kilometres between Berlin, Hamburg and Frankfurt. On an unrestricted section of autobahn, it reached 260 km/h legally and in real-world conditions. However, there is more behind this individual registration: in principle, full European homologation has now been completed, an essential requirement before cars can later be sold to customers.

Supercar figures: 1,548 PS, 350 km/h top speed and more than 600 km of range

On paper, the Xiaomi SU7 Ultra has the figures of a supercar. According to the manufacturer, the flagship offers:

  • Power: 1,548 PS from an all-electric powertrain
  • 0–100 km/h: a claimed 1.98 seconds
  • Top speed: up to 350 km/h
  • Battery: 93.7 kWh CATL Qilin II
  • Range: 630 km under the Chinese CLTC cycle

From a European perspective, that range figure needs context. The CLTC cycle used in China is more optimistic than the WLTP standard commonly used here. Experts expect the Ultra version to deliver a little more than 500 kilometres of practical WLTP-equivalent range – still an impressive result for such a powerful saloon.

Alongside the Ultra, Xiaomi is planning several more restrained SU7 variants. These are expected to span roughly 320 to 690 PS and, depending on battery size, offer up to 902 kilometres under the CLTC cycle. Converted to WLTP, that equates to around 722 kilometres – a figure that could put many established premium EVs under pressure.

How the Nürburgring becomes a marketing stage

Chinese manufacturers are taking different routes into Europe. Some are pursuing major football sponsorship agreements, while others chiefly seek attention through price. Xiaomi is clearly targeting image: Nürburgring records, striking styling, substantial power and, later, a comparatively moderate entry price.

The Nürburgring has a particular role in this strategy. Few circuits have a comparable global myth, especially among German car enthusiasts. Performing well there automatically makes a brand seem “credible”. This is precisely Xiaomi’s aim: the SU7 Ultra is intended to prove that the company can do more than make affordable smartphones.

European plan from 2027: premium appeal at a competitive price

Xiaomi is now openly saying that it is targeting a European market launch in 2027. The SU7 saloon will be the central model, supported by an SUV called the YU7. To ensure it does not fall short of European requirements, the group has established a development and design centre in Munich. Engineers and designers there are working to tailor the chassis, driver-assistance systems and interior specifically to the expectations of customers in this market.

For the SU7 without the Ultra’s extreme performance focus, Xiaomi is planning a premium positioning with a comparatively low starting price. A starting figure of about €35,000 has been suggested for simpler versions. If confirmed, the saloon would enter the territory of cars including the Tesla Model 3, Hyundai Ioniq 6 and BMW i4 – promising more equipment and range for the same money, or less.

An electric premium saloon with more than 700 km of WLTP range at a mid-market price could seriously shake up the market.

What this means for European manufacturers

Xiaomi’s record pursuit has not appeared from nowhere. Another Chinese manufacturer, with models such as the BYD Yangwang U9, is already drawing attention and taking records for itself. The Nürburgring’s chronological rankings demonstrate how fierce the competition has become – and that European brands need to adjust their pace.

Porsche, BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Tesla are therefore under pressure. On one hand, they must maintain or extend their technological advantages; on the other, their pricing structures are starting to look unstable. If a Chinese newcomer combines sports-car performance and long range with a starting price in the €35,000 region, existing margin-rich models will face difficult questions.

What terms such as homologation, CLTC and WLTP mean

Several technical terms arise in connection with the SU7 Ultra and can initially seem cumbersome. A brief explanation helps put their significance into perspective.

Successful homologation in Germany means Xiaomi has already mastered the EU’s complex requirements, including crash safety, driver-assistance systems, lighting technology, software security, charging-infrastructure compatibility and more. For potential buyers, this signals that the brand is serious: it is not merely about a handful of show laps around the Ring.

Risks, opportunities and everyday usability

Despite the impressive statistics, one question remains unanswered: how usable is a car such as the SU7 Ultra in daily life? More than 1,500 PS can rarely be exploited on country roads or motorways. Charging speed, software updates, the service network and residual values will be more interesting issues. Newcomers have traditionally had ground to make up in precisely these areas.

On the other hand, Xiaomi brings extensive consumer-electronics experience. Connected services, infotainment and smartphone integration are regarded as core strengths. If these advantages can be transferred smoothly into a car, the brand could particularly appeal to technology-minded buyers already using the Xiaomi ecosystem.

Ultimately, the European market will depend on a combination of factors: attractive prices, a credible service structure, practical range and a safety record that inspires confidence. The official arrival of the SU7 Ultra on European roads marks the moment when it becomes clear whether China’s record chase is more than a headline from the Nürburgring’s Green Hell.
