The creation of PITCH - Porto Innovation and Technology Hub is far more than a joint initiative between Politécnico do Porto, the University of Porto and Porto City Council. It is a practical, tangible response to one of Europe’s most pressing challenges today: turning knowledge into competitiveness without weakening territorial cohesion.
A European challenge: competitiveness alongside territorial cohesion
In a recent article published in Global Challenges & Regional Science, Rodríguez-Pose and Bartalucci caution that future European policy could end up channelling investment only into the places already at the forefront of innovation. They warn that this approach would deepen regional inequalities and leave a substantial share of Europe’s economic potential untapped. Their argument is clear: Europe should not be forced to choose between competitiveness and cohesion; instead, it must pursue competitiveness that is inclusive across territories.
Against that backdrop, PITCH - Porto Innovation and Technology Hub becomes especially significant.
Why Porto and the North of Portugal matter
Porto and the wider North of Portugal bring together some of the most important assets in Portugal and in Europe: outstanding universities, internationally recognised research centres, a strongly export-oriented business base, and a high level of entrepreneurial capacity. The task now is to convert these strengths into a competitive edge that can stand on a global stage.
What PITCH - Porto Innovation and Technology Hub aims to deliver
PITCH has been established to meet exactly that challenge. Beyond the physical space itself, its ambition is to build a collaborative platform linking science, technology, businesses and public administration-connecting research more closely to the needs of the economy and opening up fresh routes to innovation.
At the same time, it underlines a broader point: Europe’s development cannot rely solely on major capital cities, where key investments are often concentrated. Unlocking the potential of all territories is an essential condition for strengthening the European Union’s competitiveness.
In this way, PITCH embodies a modern approach to territorial development: when knowledge is shared and put to work for businesses and people, it becomes the central engine of competitiveness. Because Europe’s future is also being built from the North of Portugal.
Last week’s visit by James Barnes offered a further source of inspiration: true convictions are what make the difference. PITCH stands as a strong example of a vision driven by deep conviction-and of the ability to turn that conviction into a concrete initiative for the future.
