Roole Map: a free, ad‑free alternative to Waze and Google Maps

Roole Map is now positioning itself as a strong alternative to Waze and Google Maps for French drivers. The app is free, contains no advertising, and aims to help motorists cut costs on petrol, EV charging, tolls and parking. Since April, Roole Map has also allowed users to report incidents and receive community alerts.

In 2026, you no longer have to rely on Google Maps or Waze to get around. A French option for motorists already exists-one presented as a replacement for those two Google-owned navigation apps-and it is proving hugely popular. On the App Store in France, Roole Map (from the Roole motoring club) sits in the Top 5 navigation apps. According to its developer, it has reached 1 million downloads and 330,000 monthly users. The formula behind that momentum: reliable navigation, no adverts, and a stated commitment to protecting user privacy.

A navigation app that promises to help you save money

Roole Map is not simply another sat-nav, because it has been designed with French motorists in mind. One of its headline tools is its fuel-station search, which helps drivers identify the cheapest offers based on the type of fuel they use. For electric cars, Roole Map also lets you search for an available charging point.

The app also includes a feature for locating car parks with free spaces. In addition, the developer claims “guaranteed savings”, thanks to real-time display of prices for tolls, fuel, charging and parking.

User reports, like on Waze

Earlier this year, Roole Map was already taking off in France, despite lacking Waze-style community features. That gap has since been addressed: reporting tools were added through an iPhone app update in April.

In practical terms, this French rival to Google Maps and Waze already lets users report crashes, enforcement checks, roadworks and hazards-and receive warnings from the user community. At the time of writing, these alerts are also available in the Android app.

What we think

At a time when the EU is trying to reduce reliance on American technologies, it is a positive sign that French motorists can do without Google Maps and Waze while gaining a few extra benefits. That said, Roole Map does not include every feature found in Google Maps, and is clearly aimed at a more specific audience.
