Nvidia introduces RTX Spark processors for PCs

Nvidia has announced a new processor family called RTX Spark. It is a CPU range designed to take on Intel and AMD chips in our PCs, with two clear selling points: raw performance and advanced AI handling. Could this be the start of a shift in how we use laptops?

At Computex in Taipei, chief executive Jensen Huang used his keynote to take Nvidia beyond its public image as a graphics-card giant and into the CPU arena. With Spark, the company is targeting slim, lightweight laptops and going head-to-head with well-established rivals including Intel, AMD and Qualcomm.

Nvidia is positioning RTX Spark as a serious alternative to the processors that currently dominate Windows laptops. To make that credible, the company is highlighting tight integration with Microsoft, aiming for strong compatibility from day one and a smoother environment for developers.

Microsoft Windows, ARM and Prism for x86 apps

Because these systems are based on an ARM architecture, Nvidia plans to rely on Prism, Microsoft’s Windows emulator that enables x86 applications to run on ARM. The message is that everyday Windows software should behave as expected, without unpleasant surprises.

AI power and Blackwell RTX technologies in a laptop CPU

Nvidia is also leaning heavily into its core theme: AI. The firm says the chip is designed around AI workloads, with up to one petaflop of peak performance and 128 GB of built-in memory.

On the compute side, Nvidia is promising substantial throughput: as many as 6,114 Blackwell RTX cores alongside 20 low-power cores. In practical terms, the idea is to bring hallmark Nvidia graphics technologies into a CPU platform, including ray tracing and DLSS.

According to Nvidia, creators will be able to produce 3D renders of more than 90 GB, edit 12K video and work with 4K AI video-all on a laptop. And, as you would expect from ARM-based machines, these PCs are also intended to deliver excellent battery life.

Spark could therefore mark a meaningful step forward for portable PCs, and Jensen Huang is making no attempt to play down the ambition:

“The PC is being reinvented. For forty years, we launched applications. One click. Text. With RTX Spark and Microsoft Windows, you ask, and the PC does the work. RTX Spark brings together everything NVIDIA has built (CUDA, RTX, our AI platform) into a single chip. Local agents. State-of-the-art models. Creative workflows. RTX gaming. All on a laptop. This is the new PC. The AI personal computer.”

Nvidia shakes up the PC world

These processors are expected to arrive in a wide range of PCs this autumn. We are being promised machines that are powerful yet thin and light, built for intensive use. Nvidia has not shared any pricing details, but it has named the first laptops set to include Spark: Asus ProArt, Dell XPS 16, HP OmniBook Ultra, Lenovo Yoga Pro 9, and MSI Prestige 16 AI+ Flip. In other words, the initial wave is firmly premium. Microsoft has also shown its Surface Laptop Ultra, which it wants to position as the flagship for Spark.

With its ARM processors, Nvidia is making a bold entrance. The claims are as big as the company’s aspirations, and Spark could turn ultra-thin, lightweight laptops into genuine performance machines. Still, some caution is warranted. Nvidia is entering this market in a challenging year: RAM prices are extremely high, and inflation remains a major factor. The Santa Clara firm plans to differentiate by focusing on the top end, a strategy that could pay off-but it remains to be seen whether the wider market will follow and whether this first generation will be as transformative as promised.
