Far-a-day turns EV charging on the move into reality with a trailer powerbank

Charging an electric car without stopping or even getting out still feels like a far-off, unlikely prospect. Even so, Far-a-day wants to make it real by using a trailer that acts like a powerbank for electric vehicles.

How Far-a-day’s trailer powerbank charging works

On paper, the steps are straightforward. When you arrive at one of the brand’s stations, you simply park in one of the marked bays. The unit then moves by itself, positions itself alongside the car and connects automatically, so you can be ready to carry on your journey.

According to the French start-up, the whole procedure takes around two minutes, and this external battery can add roughly 300 km of range while you keep travelling.

Why this EV charging approach targets long journeys

For everyday use, electric cars can be efficient and cost-effective. The problem is that on longer trips, unavoidable charging stops still force a different pace.

With this solution, the aim is to flip the usual logic. Instead of the car and driver hunting for an available charger, the charger follows the car.

Dropping off the charger at the next station

Once the journey is over, the electric charger is left at another station, where it recharges its own energy before being ready for the next user. Along the way, it uses clean energy and claims to cost less than typical rapid charging.

The drawback is that none of this is operating yet. For now, the brand is collecting votes to decide where it could open its first stations.
