Could keeping dementia at bay be as easy as waggling your little fingers for a few seconds a day?
That is the claim behind "pinky time", a viral TikTok trend suggesting a straightforward finger exercise might reduce your chances of developing Alzheimer’s.
Clips pushing this supposed brain-health hack have pulled in millions of views. Some even imply that if you find the movement hard, it could be an early red flag for cognitive decline.
The routine involves placing your fingers into a particular configuration and then raising and lowering the little fingers. Supporters say this acts as a mini workout for the brain, helping to keep it sharp.
It is not hard to understand the appeal: a free, low-effort daily habit that could guard against one of the most feared conditions of ageing sounds almost too good to miss. The trend does borrow a little from genuine neuroscience - but the claims being made go much further than the evidence supports.
How TikTok "pinky time" is supposed to train the brain
When you try something new and fiddly with your fingers - for instance, learning unfamiliar chords on a guitar - it demands real focus. Your brain must map out each action, suppress incorrect movements, and continually fine-tune what it is doing using both visual feedback and the sensations from your fingers.
That is a surprising amount of cognitive effort for such a small physical action, which may help explain why practical hobbies such as playing an instrument or knitting are often linked with stronger memory and better brain function.
For many years, researchers have used finger-tapping tasks - where a person taps a finger repeatedly or follows a simple rhythm - to explore the relationship between movement, attention and the ageing brain. But these tasks are research tools; they should not be mistaken for clinical tests for dementia or memory loss.
Another relevant concept is that the brain can adapt to what we repeatedly ask of it, creating and strengthening connections as we learn. So, when you practise a new finger movement, you are effectively prompting your brain to reinforce and reorganise the neural pathways that support that skill.
In that limited sense, "pinky time" sits within a wider group of activities that challenge the brain through novelty and coordination. Juggling, dancing and learning a new language are other examples that may contribute to resilience as we get older.
Finger coordination, novelty and why it is not a diagnostic tool
Unfamiliar movements can certainly feel mentally taxing - but that does not mean they can diagnose cognitive decline, or reliably protect against it.
How well someone does on a finger-coordination task is shaped by many influences, such as mobility, flexibility, past injuries and how much practice they have had. A person in good health might find the movement difficult, while someone living with cognitive impairment might complete it easily.
Looking for easy fixes
The rise of "pinky time" underlines how keen many people are for simple ways to track and protect brain health. In reality, spotting the earliest stages of cognitive decline is far more complicated.
Clinicians and scientists rely on carefully designed assessments that examine multiple areas of thinking, including memory, attention, language and "executive functioning" (the planning, organising and self-control abilities we use to manage everyday tasks).
At present, there is no evidence that difficulty with this particular finger movement predicts early memory or thinking problems, and there is no strong evidence that practising it can prevent cognitive decline.
Studies of different hand and finger exercises have reported small benefits in people who already have some cognitive difficulties. But the evidence base is still limited, and it is uncertain whether any gains are large enough to meaningfully reduce dementia risk.
One further issue is that the brain seems to benefit most from activities that continue to be challenging. As a task becomes familiar, it demands less attention and less mental effort. A movement that feels difficult today may become largely automatic with repetition, which reduces its usefulness as a brain workout.
What is known to work
There is, unfortunately, no single hack that keeps the brain sharp as we age.
What does appear to make a difference is broader: staying physically active, protecting cardiovascular health, getting enough sleep and maintaining a social life. There is also increasing evidence that addressing hearing or eyesight problems can help, because it supports staying socially engaged and mentally active.
A healthy diet - particularly one similar to the Mediterranean diet - is also associated with better brain health. Lifelong learning, whether through formal education or hobbies, languages, music or other mentally stimulating pursuits, seems to be beneficial too.
As a coordination challenge, "pinky time" may be enjoyable and harmless. However, its viral promise simplifies a far more complex reality.
When it comes to protecting our brains, the evidence still points towards the less glamorous basics: exercise, sleep, a healthy diet, social connection, good sensory health and lifelong learning.
