Message on X after the 24 June earthquakes

The X social media account of Venezuela’s ousted president, Nicolás Maduro, has expressed thanks to the governments assisting the country after the 24 June earthquakes, which left at least 4490 people dead and 16,740 injured.

In a post published on Sunday on the platform, the message states: "We deeply appreciate the admiration and solidarity shown by delegations, peoples and governments around the world who shared their efforts at this very difficult and painful moment for our homeland". The post was published in New York, where the Chavista leader is being held in custody together with his wife, Cilia Flores.

International aid to Caracas, including the United States

The statement does not name any countries, despite the range of governments that have sent assistance to Caracas, including the United States. The US Government announced a "massive humanitarian response" worth more than 386 million dollars (338.8 million euros), delivered "without any delay", according to the Trump Administration on Wednesday.

On Sunday, the US Embassy in Caracas said that US military forces "are supporting the aid operations (...) led by the State Department after the devastating earthquakes" in the South American country.

Besides the United States, multiple countries-including Portugal-have supported Caracas with search-and-rescue missions, medical assistance and the delivery of humanitarian aid. Attention is now turning to the recovery phase and the rebuilding of affected infrastructure, particularly in the heavily damaged La Guaira region near the capital.

Nicolás Maduro and Cilia Flores held in New York

In another message posted on X, Maduro said that "once again Venezuela will be reborn with unity and perseverance", although it is unclear who manages the account that publishes frequent posts.

Maduro and Flores remain in a federal prison in New York, where they face legal proceedings on charges of narco-terrorism, weapons offences and conspiracy to export drugs to the United States.

Their next hearing, originally scheduled for 30 June, has been postponed to 22 July.
