Google has announced an Android XR-focused event for 8 December. Its teaser trailer strongly hints that smart glasses will feature alongside mixed-reality headsets.
The Android Show | XR Edition: what the teaser reveals
The company will air “The Android Show | XR Edition” on YouTube on 8 December. The 40-second animation already points to what may be on the agenda: one “Android” robot is shown wearing a mixed-reality headset, while another has camera-equipped smart glasses that look similar in concept to Ray-Ban Meta.
The YouTube description also sets the tone: “Find out everything you need to know about extended reality (XR): glasses, headsets and everything in between. See how Gemini gives you a more conversational, contextual and helpful experience”.
Android XR and the first devices already on the market
Google is steadily returning to the mixed-reality space. It already offers the Android XR platform for both mixed-reality headsets and smart glasses. The first product built on this new platform-the Samsung Galaxy XR headset-is already available. With the year coming to a close, the Mountain View firm is expected to bring a wave of Android XR updates, potentially alongside new devices.
What is Google preparing for Android XR?
As a reminder, Google has previously shown a prototype of smart glasses with a display, running Android XR and powered by Gemini AI. This event could be used to outline the platform’s latest progress, as well as new capabilities for the built-in AI enabled by newer Gemini releases. Google recently introduced the Gemini 3 family of models, and Gemini 3 Pro is now regarded as the best AI on the market.
That said, most people are waiting for fresh hardware announcements. It is entirely plausible that Google will use the showcase to unveil newer prototypes-or even finished products. Samsung has already confirmed it is developing smart glasses with Google. Separately, Google has announced partnerships with eyewear brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker, and it has also committed to investing 150 million dollars in Warby Parker.
Smart glasses momentum: Ray-Ban Meta sales and shortages
Smart glasses appear to be attracting mainstream interest at last. In 2025, sales of Ray-Ban Meta glasses are rising sharply. Meanwhile, Ray-Ban Meta Display-the first smart glasses from Mark Zuckerberg’s company-sold out in the United States as soon as they launched.
