The Galaxy Z Trifold has moved beyond concept clips into reality, offering three folding sections, tablet-style aspirations and laptop-grade memory. However, the fiercest online dispute is not about its hinge or display crease, but a far less exciting part hidden within: its processor.

Galaxy Z Trifold: the first genuine trifold from a major brand

Samsung has devoted years to evolving foldable phones from delicate prototypes into practical everyday products. Having introduced clamshell and book-style foldables, the Galaxy Z Trifold is its most ambitious effort so far: a three-panel device that expands into an approximately 10-inch workspace before folding into a pocket-friendly shape.

On paper, its hardware resembles an ideal device for serious multitaskers. The Z Trifold is reportedly equipped with:

  • Three joined OLED panels that create a tablet-like 10-inch screen when completely unfolded
  • Up to 16 GB of RAM to support desktop-like multitasking
  • A price of around €2,500, firmly placing it in the ultra-premium category

Samsung plainly understands that this handset is aimed at early adopters rather than occasional users. It is the sort of phone you spot once on the tube, then think about for the rest of the journey. Even so, its processor selection has caught out plenty of people who expected uncompromising specifications at such a price.

The chip behind the backlash

The Galaxy Z Trifold uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite. It is a premium chip, although it is no longer Qualcomm’s newest offering. The more recent Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 already appears in some 2025 flagship phones, providing quicker CPU cores, greater GPU efficiency and enhanced AI acceleration.

That creates an unusual contrast for a handset breaking fresh ground with a triple-fold format. Among dedicated technology fans, the unspoken expectation for ultra-premium products is clear: leading design must be matched by leading hardware, without exceptions.

The Trifold costs around €2,500, yet it skips Qualcomm’s newest flagship chip, a move many enthusiasts see as a red flag.

Industry estimates add a more tangible dimension to the issue, pointing to a meaningful gap in component pricing. The Snapdragon 8 Elite reportedly costs about $220 per unit, whereas the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 is closer to $280. For a specialist product likely to have low production yields and exceptionally high engineering costs, a $60 difference per handset can quickly become significant on the balance sheet.

Samsung’s official explanation prompts scepticism

It would be reasonable to expect Samsung to acknowledge the compromise directly: the trifold format already drives the bill of materials so high that every additional dollar matters. Instead, the company’s executives have described the decision in more carefully polished terms.

When discussing the processor choice, Samsung vice president Kang Min-seok said the focus was on delivering a “perfect and highly refined product”, with the selected chip supporting that objective. To many observers, that response sounds more like public relations than candour.

Rather than framing it as a cost-cutting measure, Samsung insists the older chip helps create a more “highly finished” Trifold - a justification that some fans find hard to swallow.

Much of the online argument comes from the gap between that marketing message and what people believe took place in the boardroom. Buyers at the top end generally accept compromises when they are presented honestly: an older chip to reduce the price, or a smaller camera sensor to protect battery life, for example. Here, the frustration stems from the apparent disconnect between Samsung’s messaging and consumers’ own reading of the figures.

Why might Samsung limit the processor?

Several sensible considerations may have influenced the choice behind the scenes. They may not sound as tidy as a press statement, but they help explain why the Z Trifold does not feature Qualcomm’s newest silicon.

Managing cost and risk

To begin with, producing a functional trifold phone is enormously costly. The hinge system alone probably demanded years of research and development alongside multiple prototype generations. It must also accommodate custom OLED panels, mechanical durability tests and a tailored internal arrangement that guides cables through several folds.

When a product pushes the boundaries of hardware engineering, manufacturers commonly seek areas in which to reduce risk. A modestly older chipset that has already been widely used in other phones provides:

  • More established drivers and firmware
  • Thermal behaviour that is better understood in everyday conditions
  • Lower fault rates and simpler diagnosis of issues
  • Greater availability and a more predictable supply chain

Seen this way, combining a first-generation trifold with a second-generation, “proven” processor becomes easier to understand, even though it conflicts with the purist view that “everything must be the latest.”

Heat and battery limitations

Physics presents another consideration. Foldable phones offer less space for dispersing heat than conventional slab handsets, while a trifold squeezes even more complexity into a limited volume. Three displays, extra hinges and additional batteries or cells divided between sections all consume the room where manufacturers would usually fit copper cooling plates and vapour chambers.

The Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 delivers greater speed, but it also presses further against performance limits. In the confined body of a trifold, that could readily mean more heat, earlier throttling and shorter periods of peak output. Opting for a less aggressive chip could produce smoother sustained performance, particularly when streaming video over multiple panels or operating three apps alongside each other.

On a thin, multi-angled device, a “slower” chip that stays cool can feel better than a bleeding-edge one that constantly throttles.

How significant is the compromise in everyday use?

For ordinary users, the processor argument may carry less weight than social media makes it appear. The Snapdragon 8 Elite remains a top-tier platform, handling multitasking, demanding applications and cloud-heavy services with little difficulty. In most situations, the distinction from the Gen 5 chip will be apparent in benchmarks rather than while checking emails or using three messaging apps simultaneously.

The Galaxy Z Trifold is not arriving in isolation. Competing Chinese brands are already developing multi-fold concepts of their own, while rumours point to further experimental designs from 2026 onwards. As this category develops, manufacturers will have to balance innovation, reliability and pricing with care.

Samsung’s reliance on a slightly older flagship chip suggests a wider change in priorities. Rather than pursuing raw specifications regardless of cost, companies may increasingly concentrate on the engineering challenges: durability, long-term software support, hinge longevity and display repairability. Such considerations rarely feature prominently in marketing presentations, but they determine whether an owner can keep a £2,000+ phone for four or five years.

Buying advice: who should consider a trifold?

A product such as the Galaxy Z Trifold is clearly not intended for mainstream customers. It is best suited to a small group whose routines truly benefit from a portable 10-inch workspace and who are willing to accept compromises in other areas.

Likely users include:

  • Professionals who constantly work with spreadsheets, dashboards and multi-window chat applications
  • Creators who sketch, storyboard or annotate documents while out and about
  • Technology enthusiasts who regard new form factors as a hobby rather than simply a tool

If your phone use is largely messaging, social feeds and photography, a conventional foldable or normal flagship handset will probably make more sense. These products now provide stronger cameras, longer battery life and, importantly, substantially less financial exposure.

Looking ahead to the next generation of tri-folds

The discussion surrounding the Galaxy Z Trifold’s processor could help direct future versions. Should sales remain limited while feedback celebrates the form factor, Samsung may be encouraged to launch a second generation with a fully current chipset and a more ambitious camera system. If early owners instead raise concerns about heat and durability, the firm could reinforce its preference for conservative silicon choices.

There is also a larger question around how these devices could alter daily habits. A trifold that opens into a pseudo-laptop display might lessen the need for a separate tablet. Combined with a keyboard cover, it could begin to encroach on the entry-level laptop market, particularly for people whose work is entirely based in web apps and cloud services.

For now, the Galaxy Z Trifold remains an intriguing compromise: a preview of what pocket computers could become in a few years, driven by a chip that belongs slightly more to the present than the future. Buyers must decide whether the revolution in form factor outweighs the absent line on the specification sheet.
