Sony will end PS5 physical game discs from January 2028

Sony has announced a complete end to physical PS5 game production: new releases will no longer be sold on disc.

Sony PS5 moves to all-digital releases from January 2028

Sony has confirmed a major shift. From January 2028 onwards, no new PS5 title will be released on disc. In practice, that means every new game produced will be distributed digitally:

“In response to changing consumer preferences and the wider entertainment industry’s move away from physical media in favour of digital, production of discs for all new games on PlayStation consoles will stop from January 2028. After this date, new games will be available only in digital format on the PlayStation Store and through retailers. This transition does not affect games already released, or due to launch before January 2028, on physical media.”

Boxes will remain, but without discs

According to Sony, boxed versions will still be sold, but they will no longer include a physical medium-only a code, in the same way as GTA 6. The Japanese firm frames this as a response to market realities:

“For Sony Interactive Entertainment, it is entirely natural to adapt to consumption trends, with overall preference for digital media now far surpassing that for physical discs. This transition will allow us to better meet our community’s expectations in terms of access to and enjoyment of video games.”

Community “expectations” make a convenient justification.

Physical gaming has been on borrowed time for years

Eliminating the physical market has long been a goal for console makers. No disc means no second-hand market-and therefore no parallel market from which they earn nothing. Sony has already tested the waters with moves in this direction, including the PSP Go in 2009, the PS5 Digital Edition sold from 2020, and a 100% digital PS5 Pro in 2024.

This time, however, a new line is crossed: players will no longer have a choice. In shops, there simply won’t be any “new” disc-based releases from 2028.

Of course, digital already represents the bulk of sales (56% in France). Even so, forcing an all-digital future harms both players-who will no longer truly own the titles they buy-and the medium itself, which will face increased preservation problems. The decision is clearly driven by economics (digital distribution is also cheaper to produce), but it is likely to significantly shake up the video games industry, and may even damage it.

A bitter irony: PS3 and PS Vita PlayStation Store closures

In a final twist, Sony has also announced the closure of the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita. As a result, players will no longer be able to purchase new games there. Only titles already owned (boxed or otherwise) will still be playable. Will the PS5 face the same fate in 10 years?
