We barely notice how profoundly the smartphone is changing our thinking – until we can suddenly no longer tolerate a clear thought for more than a few seconds.
It is a quiet Tuesday morning and there is a difficult problem to solve; twenty uninterrupted minutes of thought would be needed. Yet after twelve seconds, the hand moves almost automatically towards the smartphone. There is no ring, no message and no external prompt – only the gnawing sense that focused thought now feels somehow wrong. At precisely this point, it becomes clear that the issue is not distraction in the conventional sense, but a brain that has forgotten what deep thinking feels like.
When the brain stores constant scrolling as its normal state
Psychology uses the term “cognitive load” to describe the amount of mental effort our working memory has to handle at any one time. Anyone doing a complex sum in their head or preparing for a difficult conversation can feel that burden. What researchers have been seeing with increasing clarity in recent years is this: smartphones affect more than simply the moments when we are distracted; they also alter our internal benchmark for how much effort still feels “normal”.
A frequently cited 2017 study by the University of Texas illustrates this starkly: merely having a silent phone on the desk – screen facing down, muted and unused – is enough to measurably reduce mental performance. The good news is that the brain’s adaptability can also be used constructively. Neuroplasticity means that structures and networks change according to how they are used – in either direction. A weekend of “digital detox” is not enough. What is needed is training more like a gym routine: small, regular stimuli that gradually build up.
Planned boredom as a training session
A simple starting point is to deliberately do nothing for ten minutes each day. No phone, no book and no podcast. Just sit or walk slowly. Thoughts may jump around; there is no objective. Many people can barely tolerate the first attempts – the discomfort reveals how low their tolerance for unstructured thinking has become.
After two or three weeks, many report that ideas begin to surface again: unprompted memories, new approaches to problems and linked thoughts. The Default Mode Network starts to return.
Holding complexity in your mind – without escaping to Google
The second component is to consciously take on tasks involving several variables, while holding everything in your head. This might mean planning a project, thinking through a conflict or structuring a major decision. Spend five to fifteen minutes on it without writing anything down, researching or seeking a second opinion.

- Clear the home screen, leaving only a few core apps visible
- Charge the phone in another room after a set time
- Use a traditional alarm clock rather than a smartphone beside the bed
These small obstacles reduce the number of micro-decisions (“just check it or not?”). This makes the “brain drain” identified by the Texas study smaller, increasing the thinking capacity available to us.
Learning to interpret effort differently
One point is often underestimated: we have forgotten how to read cognitive effort as a normal signal. When a text becomes genuinely demanding after two minutes, it can seem like a warning: “This is not going to work today; I’m done.” In reality, it is simply a brain reacting after becoming used to constant shifts in stimulation.
The tense feeling at the beginning of deep concentration is not a stop sign, but the muscle soreness of a system that has gone untrained for a long time.
Those who consciously relabel that sensation make progress. Rather than “I cannot concentrate”, say: “This is where the training starts.” That small reframing takes much of the power away from internal resistance.
What is at stake: more than productivity
The implications extend far beyond to-do lists and appointments. As the capacity for sustained, inward thinking fades, we lose access to a deeper version of our own personality: the version that processes experiences thoroughly, allows contradictory feelings to exist side by side, and develops its own views rather than simply repeating other people’s opinions.

This buffer appears to reduce the risk of dementia and help people remain mentally fit for longer.

The five-minute test for your own thinking
Anyone wanting to find out how deep their own thinking goes can try a simple self-experiment. Set a timer for five minutes. Choose one thought or question: “How do I want to work in five years?” or “What is really weighing on me right now?” Then remove the phone, notebook and all distractions. Simply sit and hold the thought.
What matters is not whether a brilliant insight emerges. The interesting part lies in the stages in between: when does the impulse arise to look something up? How does the body feel – restless, pressured or bored? After a wave of inner fidgeting, does something resembling an original thought eventually surface?
Practical everyday strategies for a more resilient thinking brain
Once the principle is understood, many small adjustments can be made in daily life. Here are several examples that can be combined:
- Create phone-free islands: have your first coffee in the morning, lunch and the walk to the supermarket consistently without a screen.
- Read in “substantial chunks”: rather than skimming ten articles, deliberately choose a more demanding book and read 15 pages at a time every day.
- Have conversations without a second screen: keep the phone out of sight during conversations in order to focus on one thing.
- Block out creative time: once or twice a week, set aside 30 minutes solely for ideas, sketches or brainstorming on paper.
Those who wish can also make the behaviour measurable: for example, write down for one week how often the phone is unlocked “out of habit” each day. Observation alone changes behaviour and reveals how automatically many reaches for the screen take place.
One thing is clear: nobody needs to become a technology monk. Smartphones are useful and often indispensable. The key step is regaining the ability to choose consciously when to use one, rather than reflexively filling every spare second. That is where the reclaiming of those quiet inner spaces begins, where genuine thoughts emerge from mere information.
