ChatGPT is back on WhatsApp in the EEA and Switzerland

ChatGPT is once again available on WhatsApp after being removed in January - but only within the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. OpenAI is taking advantage of interim measures imposed by the European Commission as part of an ongoing antitrust investigation targeting Meta.

If you live in the EEA or Switzerland, you can use ChatGPT on WhatsApp again. By way of reminder, OpenAI withdrew this integration in January to comply with a new Meta policy that banned this kind of chatbot (with the exception of Meta AI) from its messaging service. However, since Monday, the feature has been accessible again.

What ChatGPT on WhatsApp lets you do

“On WhatsApp, users can chat with ChatGPT, import images, send voice messages, create images and use ChatGPT in many languages. It is also possible, but not required, to link your ChatGPT account in order to benefit from higher usage limits,” OpenAI explained.

To use ChatGPT on WhatsApp, you simply need to go to this link. You can also start chatting with ChatGPT on WhatsApp by sending a message to the verified contact 1-800-CHATGPT, at +1 800 242 8478.

OpenAI benefits from an ongoing European Commission investigation

It is worth recalling that, by changing WhatsApp’s rules to exclude AI chatbots that compete with Meta AI, Meta prompted the European Commission to open an investigation. That inquiry is still under way. In the meantime, Brussels has adopted interim measures requiring Meta to restore free access to WhatsApp for competing general-purpose AI chatbots.

“That will prevent serious and irreparable harm to competition in this fast-growing market, caused by Meta’s conduct which, at first sight, breaches EU competition rules,” Brussels said when announcing the decision in June.

For now, it is not known when the European Commission’s antitrust investigation will conclude. The Commission notes that, for this type of procedure, there is no legally defined deadline.
