Bytedance brings Seedance 2.0 to CapCut and TikTok to take on OpenAI and Google

Bytedance’s Seedance 2.0 AI is now making its way into CapCut and TikTok. On raw performance, it is positioning itself as a credible challenger to OpenAI and Google’s video-generation technology.

Only a few months ago, Google’s latest Veo models and OpenAI’s Sora were widely seen as the benchmarks for AI video generation. Then, in February, a new contender arrived: Seedance 2.0, a fresh system built by Bytedance, the Chinese company behind TikTok. This week, it is finally landing inside TikTok, following its earlier release on CapCut, the video-creation app closely tied to TikTok.

For some time, Bytedance has been rolling out Dreamina Seedance 2.0 (a product powered by Seedance 2.0) on CapCut in a limited number of countries. The feature is reserved for paying users and is designed to produce extremely lifelike videos. Bytedance has placed particular emphasis on the realism of movement in generated clips, as well as the model’s ability to follow the instructions it is given. In April, Dreamina Seedance 2.0 even climbed above other video generators (including those from Google and OpenAI) in the Video Arena ranking, which is based on votes from internet users.

This week, Bytedance also introduced Dreamina Seedance 2.0 within TikTok’s Symphony Creative Studio tool for advertisers. According to the company, the new AI will enable them to create an advert in a matter of hours-work that previously could have taken several weeks. Either way, the sample videos produced with this AI (via CapCut) are striking.

Why did Seedance 2.0 shake up Hollywood?

The February announcement of Seedance 2.0 clearly rattled the entertainment industry. Beyond the fact that the AI appears highly capable, it was also accused of infringing intellectual property. Disney and the Motion Picture Association, which represents major US studios, for example sent cease-and-desist letters to Bytedance. In response, Bytedance said it would introduce measures to strengthen intellectual property protection within its technology and prevent “unauthorised use of intellectual property and likeness by users”.

Now that Dreamina Seedance 2.0 is arriving in the company’s flagship products, Bytedance is foregrounding the idea of a more responsible AI. “The company’s policies against harmful content and unauthorised use of likeness or intellectual property are enforced through multiple moderation checks on prompts, reference images and content generated with our tools,” the integration announcement for Symphony Creative Studio states.

What we think

Even after the cease-and-desist letters that followed Seedance 2.0’s February launch, this new model could reshape how videos are created on TikTok. The AI looks broadly on a par with what Google and OpenAI offer. And with it, Bytedance can remain competitive against YouTube, which already provides creators with features powered by Google’s Veo models.

Dreamina Seedance 2.0 should also support TikTok’s revenue, given that it is now being offered as a tool for the platform’s advertisers.
