Millions of drivers around the world rely on this navigation app every day, and its next update is far more than a visual refresh. Google is bundling 3D guidance, see-through building rendering and a new AI assistant into one package designed to make driving calmer and the planning around it noticeably smarter.
Immersive Navigation: when the map suddenly feels three-dimensional
Until now, Maps may have looked polished, but at heart it was still a flat map. That is changing with the new “Immersive Navigation” feature. Route guidance is moving to a true 3D view that mirrors the real world far more closely than traditional road maps.
To do this, Google processes vast quantities of Street View imagery and aerial photography using its Gemini AI models. The result is a kind of digital streetscape that makes junctions, bridges, rows of buildings and even slight changes in elevation easier to read.
