Renault Group adds an LFP battery option under Renaulution
Renault Group is set to broaden its battery line-up, introducing new choices that could come in at more competitive prices. Up to now, every electric model from the French manufacturer has been fitted with NMC (Nickel, Manganese and Cobalt) batteries. In the near future, however, buyers will also be able to choose an LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) battery.
At the Munich Motor Show (IAA 2025), Renault Group Chief Executive François Provost said that all electric models developed under the Renaulution strategic plan, launched in 2021, will gain an LFP battery option.
“Temos de alcançar os nossos melhores concorrentes”, the executive said, referring to Chinese carmakers. According to International Energy Agency data, 75% of electric cars sold in China last year used LFP batteries, while in Europe the figure was just 10%.
LFP vs NMC batteries: cost and performance trade-offs
Beyond their chemistry, LFP and NMC batteries differ mainly in cost and performance. LFP packs are cheaper to manufacture, but they have lower energy density, which restricts driving range. NMC batteries, by contrast, cost more to produce yet deliver higher energy density, resulting in lighter electric cars with greater range.
New electric Twingo is the first
The first model due to receive an LFP battery will be the new 100% electric Renault Twingo, which is expected to be unveiled towards the end of the year, according to Automotive News Europe.
In addition, another Dacia model is also expected to get this option, although there are no official details yet.

The Renault Mégane E-Tech, which is due to be updated next year, is also expected to be launched with an LFP battery option.
European rivals already offer LFP choices
Renault Group is not the first to pursue this approach in Europe. Volvo launched the EX30 with both LFP and NMC batteries, while Mercedes-Benz is also planning to offer the next generation of the A-Class with an LFP battery option.
