Royal Navy moves towards air-launched uncrewed vessels

The United Kingdom’s Royal Navy has taken a significant step towards operating uncrewed craft delivered straight from the air. In a first-of-its-kind trial, an uncrewed surface vessel was parachute-dropped from an Airbus A400M military transport aircraft over the North Sea, showing the approach could be viable for future military operations.

North Sea trial: 1,300 ft drops over six days

The exercise was run over six days and involved four separate drops from an altitude of 1,300 ft (about 396 m). The Royal Navy said this was the first launch of its kind carried out using cargo extraction from a military aircraft.

According to the Navy, the trials demonstrated that the vessel can withstand an aerial deployment and then begin operating without relying on a support ship or a nearby port-substantially widening the ways autonomous maritime systems could be used.

Project Beehive, Kraken Technology Group and Capewell

The test programme was conducted by Kraken Technology Group and Capewell, with Royal Navy support under Project Beehive. The ability to deploy by air also boosts the speed, range and flexibility with which these platforms can be put into service-particularly those acquired through Project Beehive, an initiative designed to accelerate the adoption of emerging technologies in support of building a hybrid fleet combining crewed and uncrewed capabilities.

Kraken K3 Scout and the Universal Maritime Craft Aerial Delivery System

The trials used a Kraken K3 Scout configured to Project Beehive requirements. The model can carry out multiple mission types, including surveillance, force protection and precision strikes.

For the drop, the vessel was mounted to the Universal Maritime Craft Aerial Delivery System developed by Capewell-effectively a launch pallet to which the vehicle is secured before being released from the aircraft using Kraken’s optional airdrop kit.
