iOS 27 could let Siri integrate other AI chatbots beyond ChatGPT

On Apple Intelligence-compatible devices, you can use ChatGPT from within Siri’s interface for quick access. And in iOS 27, due to be unveiled in June, the same kind of integration could reportedly be opened up to other AI chatbots.

Apple Intelligence: ChatGPT inside Siri

At WWDC in June 2024, Apple introduced Apple Intelligence. Among the AI features arriving with that update was the option to link Siri with ChatGPT. On supported products, ChatGPT can take over from Siri’s own AI while you continue to use Apple’s familiar assistant interface.

ChatGPT is also woven into other Apple Intelligence tools, including Apple’s writing assistance features. The aim is to let people tap into the capabilities of OpenAI’s large language models while staying within Siri and Apple’s wider AI toolkit.

Apple also made it clear at the time that bringing ChatGPT to Siri was only the first step. “We want to give users the choice of the models they want, maybe Google Gemini in the future”, said Craig Federighi, Apple’s head of software in Cupertino.

However, almost two years after that statement, ChatGPT remains the only chatbot that can be paired with Siri and the other Apple Intelligence features. That said, Apple appears not to have dropped the idea: according to a new Bloomberg article by journalist Mark Gurman, the long-promised capability should finally be shown in June at Apple’s next WWDC.

New AI chatbots could plug into Siri

On 8 June, during the conference’s opening keynote, Apple is expected to present its new operating systems, including iOS 27. One of the reported additions would let AI chatbots available on the App Store gain the same benefits as ChatGPT by connecting directly to Siri’s interface.

If the developers of these apps adopt the feature, it could enable people to use services such as Google’s Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity via Siri’s interface.

A smarter Siri is still on the way - with Google Gemini

Separately, Apple is continuing work on a new version of Siri that is intended to be more intelligent and able to complete more tasks.

To build this next Siri, Apple has chosen to partner with Google, giving it access to Gemini’s AI models as well as the AI infrastructure operated by the Mountain View company. Apple has already confirmed that this updated Siri will launch this year.
