OpenAI launches ChatGPT Work, powered by GPT-5.6

OpenAI has just rolled out ChatGPT Work, a new tool built on its GPT-5.6 models to automate administrative work.

The age of basic chatbots is giving way to AI agents that do more than answer prompts: they carry out tasks like a genuine colleague. Anthropic, OpenAI’s main rival, has been enjoying major success with Claude Cowork, a Claude feature focused on automating admin tasks. Last night, the company behind ChatGPT released a comparable offering called ChatGPT Work.

According to OpenAI, “It can gather information from your apps and workflows to create finished deliverables such as spreadsheets, slides, documents and web apps, and spend hours on complex projects by breaking them into smaller steps and completing them autonomously.” ChatGPT Work is underpinned by Codex, the AI-agent platform OpenAI originally built for developers and has steadily broadened beyond coding-related use cases.

Because ChatGPT Work is integrated directly into ChatGPT, it should help OpenAI reach a wider audience and encourage more people to take out a paid subscription (to access more compute). To use it, you simply update the ChatGPT app for Mac or Windows, which now includes the standard chat interface, ChatGPT Work and Codex.

A working week condensed into 24 hours

In any case, this new ChatGPT capability is pitched as a way to cut the time required to deliver a task. OpenAI says its sales teams used ChatGPT Work to prove a project’s feasibility starting from nothing more than conversations. The AI reportedly completed the work in 24 hours, even though it is normally a task that takes weeks.

OpenAI also notes that its finance department used ChatGPT Work to produce month-end close documents and the company’s forecasts within a few hours-work that would usually take several days.

Automating recurring administrative tasks with ChatGPT Work

ChatGPT Work can also be set up to run recurring jobs. For instance, you can ask the AI to check a website or dashboard at regular intervals and flag changes, or to update a presentation automatically whenever feedback is received.

To power this automation, ChatGPT Work relies on the GPT-5.6 models that OpenAI is also launching this week, after receiving the green light from the US government. This new generation of AI comes in three variants, with the most capable being GPT-5.6 Sol, available to ChatGPT Plus, ChatGPT Pro and ChatGPT Business subscribers. According to a post from Artificial Analysis, GPT-5.6 Sol reaches almost the same level of intelligence as Anthropic’s powerful Claude Fable 5 model.
