ITA Airways, the Italian airline, is set to become the first carrier in Europe to train its cabin crew on Airbus A220 and A321neo emergency door procedures using virtual reality (VR) paired with a programmable robotic arm. The new set-up will take the place of traditional full-size door mock-ups.
ITA Airways leads with VR and robotic arm training in Europe
The robotic arm has been designed to mimic the weight, resistance and movement involved in opening and closing the doors, delivering a realistic hands-on feel during practice.
Alongside this, VR headsets recreate a three-dimensional cabin environment, complete with emergency exits, door controls and the associated sounds.
Mixed reality for Airbus A220 and A321neo emergency door procedures
Marzio Caneva, ITA’s Director of Operations, says mixed reality helps overcome the constraints of conventional training by providing experiences that are more realistic, flexible and safe. “We are rethinking the development of critical skills with this technology,” he says.
The robotic arm also makes it possible to broaden training scenarios without having to alter physical equipment. It can replicate malfunctions and complex situations, while also cutting down the amount of space required for training.
AirVR technology, digital twins and potential fleet expansion
The system was created by the Danish company AirVR, which tailors the technology to each airline’s specific procedures. The solution builds a “digital twin” of areas such as the galley or overwing exits, using hand-tracking technology to operate the doors.
ITA Airways is considering rolling out this technology to other aircraft types in its fleet, extending innovation across its crew training programme.
