As Apple prepares to unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, rumours are already emerging about the 2027 models. According to these reports, Apple is expected to go all out on design to mark the iPhone’s 20th anniversary.

September is drawing near and, as it does every year, Apple fans are eagerly awaiting the unveiling of the next iPhones. Rumours suggest that the iPhone 18 Pro will feature Apple’s first 2 nm processor, improved battery life and a camera upgrade. In design terms, it may closely resemble the iPhone 17 Pro, although sources indicate that Apple could have reduced the size of the Dynamic Island at the top of the display.

iPhone 18 Pro: an incremental update?

For now, these claims remain rumours. If they prove accurate, the iPhone 18 Pro may simply be an upgraded version of the iPhone 17 Pro. That could leave many consumers undecided, particularly if Apple has to raise prices because of the memory chip shortage. Furthermore, people who buy the iPhone 18 Pro this year could regret doing so once they discover the new features the Cupertino company is reportedly preparing for next year.

iPhone 2027: a glass-focused redesign for its 20th anniversary

The iPhone will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2027. Apple introduced major changes with the iPhone X for the handset’s tenth anniversary in 2017, so significant innovations - rather than simple upgrades - are also expected for the twentieth anniversary. Rumours indicate that Apple is developing an entirely new glass design for the occasion. Those reports have recently been supported by Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, one of the most reliable sources on Apple’s upcoming products.

The new iPhone design for 2027 becomes clearer

In the article, Gurman refers to the “glass-focused iPhone redesign for the device’s 20th anniversary”. The two 2027 ‘Pro’ iPhones would have a glass front and back curving around the sides, with a metal band running through the middle. The journalist also says that, at this point, changes are no longer possible, as Apple effectively finalises the design of its future iPhones a year in advance.

In any case, the company appears to be planning a major design overhaul. It could boost sales next year.
