iPhone Ultra: the foldable design may disappoint

Ahead of its September unveiling, the design of Apple’s first foldable iPhone is becoming clearer. If the details currently circulating online prove accurate, however, its appearance may leave some people unhappy.

This September, Apple is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Alongside these two conventional handsets, the Cupertino company should also launch its first-ever foldable iPhone, already dubbed the “iPhone Ultra” or “iPhone Fold” by the media. The device may use a format similar to Samsung’s recently launched Galaxy Z Fold8, which is already proving highly popular. When unfolded, this foldable iPhone would offer a very large display while remaining compact when shut. It appears, though, that Apple may have had to make some design compromises to finally bring a folding screen to its fans.

iPhone Ultra design revealed in alleged leak

Apple very rarely teases its products, so there is still no official information about this forthcoming foldable iPhone. As usual, though, numerous rumours and leaks concerning the iPhone Ultra are already appearing online. Recently, Ice Universe, one of the most dependable leak sources, shared a video offering a glimpse of what this smartphone could look like when folded.

Apple has accustomed us to balanced, symmetrical designs, yet the video indicates that the iPhone Ultra could feature rounded corners on one side and a squared-off shape along the hinge side. That is not all: the same footage also suggests that the selfie camera may sit at the edge of the display rather than in the centre. This could frustrate people who want perfectly composed pictures, as users would probably need to change their usual selfie-taking habits.

The same issue with the internal selfie camera

On the internal folding screen, the selfie camera may likewise be located in a corner of the display instead of nearer the centre. At least, that is what is shown by a mock-up recently shared by Sony Dickson, another leak source regularly cited by the media.

As always, this information should be treated cautiously, since it does not come from an official source. Still, if these reports are correct, certain aspects of the iPhone Ultra design could prove divisive.

Even with these inconsistencies, Apple’s foldable iPhone is still very likely to sell extremely well.
