Samsung embraces the square format
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 brings back a format many had assumed was gone for good: the Passport design. Its outer display uses a 4:3 aspect ratio, while the internal screen adopts 16:9. The key advantage is clear: you can watch videos or play games without unsightly black bars on either side of the display.

This square-shaped format is also particularly useful day to day. We especially enjoy using the external screen for quick tasks, as it is ideally suited to them. The Fold 8 does make a few technical compromises, though, including a rather average camera setup with two 50-megapixel sensors and battery life that still falls short. For fans of the original format, Samsung has also released the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, succeeding the Galaxy Z Fold 7.

The most affordable Flip
The Motorola Razr has long been the outsider compared with the Galaxy Z Flip, yet it is unfairly underestimated given how compelling it is. With the Razr 70, Motorola continues to build on its established strengths: a smart, rounded design and faultless software.

From a technical perspective, it remains a solid proposition. Its real appeal lies in the software. You get a clean version of Android designed directly by Google. As a result, the Pixel 10 Pro Fold is among the first to receive every new OS release. It does not have one standout feature designed to win you over, but it is the very definition of a safe bet.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8
The timeless classic
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 does not shake up Samsung's established formula. Even so, it remains an essential choice in this category and a timeless classic. We like its uncluttered design, thoughtfully designed software and flexibility. More than simply a phone, it is a fashionable object.
Choosing the Z Flip 8 does involve compromises, however. Its camera performance is quite average, for a start, while battery life is once again far from best-in-class. This is a choice led by the heart rather than the head.
