Google launches Tap to share on Android for contact sharing

Google has unveiled Tap to share, an Android feature that lets people swap contact details between Android smartphones simply by bringing the two devices close together. The feature is initially rolling out to the Google Pixel 6 and newer Google handsets, before reaching other Android models later on. Through Quick Share, Tap to share can also make it easier to send files such as photos and videos.

Google has just introduced its new Pixel 11 series smartphones, packed with new features. However, the company also has something in store for people who are not planning to replace their phone any time soon. It has announced an Android addition called “Tap to share” which, much like the iPhone’s “NameDrop”, enables users to exchange contacts with a simple movement.

As the video below shows, users only need to place two smartphones near one another for each person to send their contact information, rather than trading business cards or entering the details manually.

Google Pixel smartphones get Tap to share first

This useful new Android feature is available from today, although it is not yet supported on every smartphone. At present, the rollout is limited to the Google Pixel 6 and the company’s newer models. Google has already said that Tap to share will be coming “soon” to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, Fold8 and Flip8. The feature will then arrive on other eligible Android models before the end of the year.

Quick Share makes Android file sharing easier

As Tap to share is built into Quick Share, it can also simplify file transfers between compatible Android smartphones. “From your home screen, simply bring your compatible Android device close to another Android device for an instant, two-way exchange. To share photos or videos, open your phone’s sharing menu, then bring the devices together,” Google explains.
