2021 flagships are being retired
Xiaomi has officially brought software support to an end for four smartphone models. According to Xiaomi Security Centre and the Android Enterprise Recommended list, no further updates will be released for Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro, Xiaomi 12 Lite and Redmi Note 12 5G.
End-of-Life (EOL) status for Xiaomi 12 series
All four handsets have been moved to End-of-Life (EOL) status. In practice, this means a complete stop to OTA updates, security patches and any new features. Their final software versions are:
- Xiaomi 12 - HyperOS 3.0 on Android 15;
- Xiaomi 12 Pro - HyperOS 3.0 on Android 15;
- Redmi Note 12 5G - HyperOS 2.0 on Android 14;
- Xiaomi 12 Lite - HyperOS 1.0 on Android 14.
Why Xiaomi ended updates for Xiaomi 12, Xiaomi 12 Pro, Xiaomi 12 Lite and Redmi Note 12 5G
As XiaomiTime reports, the move is linked not only to the age of these models but also to hardware limitations. The Xiaomi 12 series is based on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, a chip that has been criticised for running hot and offering less-than-ideal power efficiency. With HyperOS continuing to evolve into a “heavier” platform packed with more AI features, extending support for these devices could have made those issues even more pronounced.
