Sony has promised that you will be able to buy a PS5 when GTA 6 launches, despite the RAM shortage.

Could the RAM crisis affect the release of the decade’s most anticipated game? GTA 6 is due to arrive on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles on 19 November. While console prices keep climbing and manufacturers compete for the available RAM supply, Sony now says there will be enough consoles for everyone.

The manufacturer clarified the situation in its financial results. Sony says it has secured enough inventory to make its PS5 available to all potential buyers at the end of the year:

“Regarding the impact of memory market conditions on PlayStation 5 hardware, we have secured the amount of memory required to achieve our forecast sales volume for fiscal year 2026 (editor’s note: ending in April 2027), and our hardware profitability plan for fiscal year 2026 remains unchanged, at a level similar to fiscal year 2025.”

Sony sells fewer PS5 consoles, but at higher prices

Rising prices, inflation and questionable decisions that have damaged its reputation saw Sony’s PS5 sales fall in the first quarter of 2026: 1.6 million units were sold, compared with 2.5 million during the same period in 2025. In total, 95.3 million consoles have been sold since 2020, making the PS5 a major commercial success. By comparison, the PS4 sold 117 million units, while the PS3 reached 87 million.

GTA 6 could boost PS5 demand

The arrival of GTA 6 is expected to give this generation a fresh lift. According to early analyst estimates, Rockstar’s game is already on course to smash every record. Players who have not yet bought a console will logically rush to get one despite its eye-watering price. Sony raised its prices by €100 on average a few months ago: the standard PS5 now costs €650, while the PS5 Pro is priced at €900.

RAM crisis casts doubt over Sony’s future

Once the GTA 6 period has passed, however, Sony’s outlook appears considerably bleaker. The RAM crisis is still paralysing the market, and 2027 looks uncertain, both in terms of stock management and console pricing. At the same time, the manufacturer has drawn the anger of players and part of the industry by announcing the complete end of physical games from January 2028. For now, it is too early to know whether this justified anger will affect sales, but one thing is certain: it will remain in players’ minds, like an irritating tune they cannot shake.
