With bags to pack, a check-out time to meet and attention split between documents, mobile phones and onward plans, guests can easily leave belongings behind when departing a hotel. At Rede Master Hotéis, staff recover an average of 40 guest items each month.

Mobile phone chargers, clothing, dentures and shoes are among the items most often left behind. Glasses, headphones, medicines, accessories and other personal belongings also feature on the list. In many instances, guests have used these items until the final moments of their stay, making them more likely to be overlooked.

Hotel rooms contain several places that require checking before departure. Staff commonly find belongings in drawers, wardrobes, safes, bathrooms and plug sockets. Small possessions connected to electronic equipment, or stored out of sight, may be missed while bags are being checked.

According to Lívia Trois, managing director of Rede Master Hotéis, the check-out process itself can lead to these situations. Leaving involves packing luggage, checking documents and moving bags, alongside other tasks that can distract travellers.

Technology changes the types of items left behind

The growing use of electronic devices has also altered the range of objects found in rooms. Chargers, cables, adaptors and headphones now appear more regularly, reflecting the role of mobile phones, tablets and laptops in travel routines.

Mobile phone chargers top Rede Master Hotéis’ ranking. Because they often remain plugged in until shortly before departure, they are particularly easy to forget. The same applies to cables and adaptors left beside the bed, on the desk or elsewhere in the room.

Clothes and shoes are also regularly recovered. Garments left in drawers, wardrobes or beneath the bed may go unnoticed while luggage is being packed. Smaller objects, including headphones and accessories, can be left in different areas of the room.

The list also includes less usual cases. Dentures and intimate personal belongings are among the items discovered by hotel teams. While these fall outside the most commonly forgotten objects, they are still part of the work carried out by staff responsible for belongings left in rooms.

How returned belongings are handled

When an item is found after check-out, the hotel identifies it, records it and places it in storage. The team also contacts the guest to confirm that the item has been located and explain the collection or delivery options.

This procedure receives particular attention where an item has personal value, contains documents or is connected with the use of medicines. For the hotel group, an item’s worth is not necessarily determined by its price, as some belongings may hold sentimental importance for the person who left them behind.

To reduce the chance of forgetting something, guests are advised to carry out one final check before leaving. This should cover plug sockets, drawers, wardrobes, the safe and bathroom, as well as the space beneath the bed.

Ranking of the most commonly forgotten hotel items

The four items that appear most often in Rede Master Hotéis’ survey are mobile phone chargers, clothing, dentures and shoes. The ranking includes both items linked to travel routines and personal possessions that may remain out of sight while luggage is being packed.
