Clicks Communicator: a BlackBerry-style smartphone returns

The Clicks Communicator is a new smartphone with an unusual twist: it brings back the look and feel of classic BlackBerry handsets.

Back in the early 2010s, Android was still finding its feet and the market largely revolved around two big names: Apple and BlackBerry. Apple pushed the large touchscreen concept that ultimately became the standard, while BlackBerry built its identity around hardware keyboards. BlackBerry may be gone, but plenty of fans still miss those devices - and they now have a potential modern alternative, as the Clicks Communicator has been presented in more detail.

From an iPhone keyboard case to the Clicks Communicator smartphone

Clicks first got attention with a physical-keyboard case for the iPhone. At CES 2026, the company took the next step by announcing its first smartphone, the Clicks Communicator. It has now expanded on that announcement with a lengthy video.

Clicks Communicator: the BlackBerry-style form factor makes a comeback

Clicks is upfront about its target audience: the Communicator is designed for former BlackBerry fans who want the same old-school typing experience. It therefore adopts the Canadian brand’s familiar layout, pairing a 4-inch OLED screen with a physical keyboard - while still being very much a modern device rather than a 2010-era handset.

Android 17 and Niagara launcher: built for simple communication

The Clicks Communicator will run Android 17 with the Niagara launcher. In practical terms, the idea is a simpler interface than a typical Android phone: the home screen shows just four apps and a widget, while the rest of your apps sit in a drawer.

The focus is clearly on messaging and calling, with floating windows and automatic keyboard support. Clicks does not really go into detail about the processor or the camera, but both are described as modest. That is a deliberate decision, as the phone is intended primarily for writing and calling, plus “two or three” extra tasks - nothing more.

There is no need to worry about app support: all Android apps will work, and you will be able to connect it to Android Auto for navigation or music playback.

Design, battery access, and the physical extras

Users can open the rear cover to reach the SIM card, the microSD slot, and the removable 4,000 mAh battery. Other notable design touches include a 3.5 mm headphone jack for wired earphones and a fingerprint sensor built into the space bar.

The phone also includes a dedicated AI button and a notification LED.

Clicks is aiming the Communicator not only at the nostalgic crowd, but also at people who want a communication-first smartphone to help cut down on screen time. On paper, it is a compelling idea, and it will be sold in white, black, or green before the end of the year. Pricing is set at $499, and pre-orders are already open with a $199 deposit.
