Google has announced that its Gemini app has passed one billion users, while sharing several details about how people are using its AI. The company says that interactions are becoming especially popular, particularly among parents.
Gemini’s popularity has grown rapidly thanks to the performance of its AI, its useful everyday features and its integration across Google’s ecosystem of services and products, including Android. The Gemini app now has more than one billion monthly active users, bringing it very close to ChatGPT’s user numbers. In its announcement, Google also offered some notable insights into how Gemini is being used.
The update shows, for instance, that Gemini’s voice interface is changing users’ day-to-day routines. Some 63% of people using Google’s AI speak to Gemini directly, and certain users rely exclusively on voice mode. Google also says that parents especially value this voice interface, using it to save time in everyday life.
“Busy parents are 43% more likely to use voice for everyday tasks,” writes the Mountain View company. Speaking to the AI keeps users’ hands free while allowing it to complete tasks on their behalf.
Sharing a camera feed or screen content with Gemini is also increasingly common. One in five Gemini Live interactions uses this feature, according to Google, which says it is especially popular with DIY project enthusiasts and students.
Gemini has also won over Apple users
On Android, Gemini has replaced Google Assistant as the default assistant. On Google’s platform, it can already interact with more than 40 popular apps to help users work more productively. However, Google’s figures also show that its AI is highly popular on Apple devices: Gemini already has more than 100 million active users on iOS.
Gemini’s image-generation feature is also proving highly popular. The Nano Banana models now generate more than 150 million images every day. Google says Gemini’s creative tools are particularly popular with small and medium-sized businesses.
A milestone ahead of the update everyone is waiting for
Google has released these Gemini usage figures at a time when its AI team is under close scrutiny. While OpenAI and Anthropic have already introduced their most powerful new models, Google is still preparing to launch Gemini 3.6 Pro. The company recently confirmed that it is also developing Gemini 4, an entirely new generation.
It is worth noting that the figures Google shared this week apply only to the Gemini app. Internet users also interact with its AI through other products and applications, including its search engine. Google recently rolled out this Gemini integration in Google Search in France.
Also worth knowing: like Gemini, Gemma is a major success
Google also develops open “Gemma” models that anyone can download and run locally, with some able to operate on a smartphone. According to the company, Gemma models have now also surpassed one billion downloads.
